Coastal Carolina softball mercy ruled the College of Charleston 9-1 on Wednesday evening at St. John Stadium.
The Chanticleers struck in the bottom of the first inning with back-to-back RBI doubles. Shortstop Brie Normandin knocked an RBI double to score first baseman Georgia Hood.
Infielder Kaelin Cash followed that with an RBI double to score Normandin and give CCU an early 2-0 lead.
Charleston starting pitcher Campbell Schaen lasted one inning against the Chants allowing three hits, five runs and five walks.
Coastal followed up with a string of runs throughout the second inning.
Hood drew a walk with the bases loaded to bring infielder Moira Baxter home.
Normandin followed with a two-run RBI single, bringing home third baseman Delaney Keith and outfielder Clara Hudgens to give Coastal a 5-0 lead entering the third inning.
CCU fan Ava Martin expressed her satisfaction with Coastal’s game play.
“I think they’re a good all-around team in terms of offense, defense, energy and communication,” Martin said. “They need to keep on doing what they’re doing.”
Charleston responded in the top of the fourth inning when outfielder Samantha Horn hit an RBI single, driving in outfielder Halle Cannon and cutting the Coastal’s lead to 5-1.
Coastal’s starting pitcher McKennah Metzger picked up her fourth win of the season. She pitched four innings, only allowing three hits, one run, two walks and recording four strikeouts.
CCU extended their lead to 7-1 in the bottom of the fourth. They knocked in back-to-back RBI singles courtesy of utility players Libby Pippin and McKennah Metzger, scoring outfielder Hope McDonald and catcher Izzy Ramirez.
Coastal fan Blake Robinson noted Coastal’s offensive improvement.
“We had a lot more base hitting than the last few games,” Robinson said. “We had a lot of singles and doubles today.”
Coastal ended the game in the bottom of the fifth inning with a three-run home run by Hood, bringing the winning runs, Keith and Hudgens, home to secure a 9-1 victory over Charleston.
Coastal Carolina will begin a three-game series against Marshall University starting on Friday at 6 p.m.
