We at The Chanticleer are excited to introduce our fourth candidate program this spring semester. We are currently looking for reporters, graphic designers and photographers. The candidate program is a great way for those who are interested in journalism, media and civic engagement to learn how to write, edit and see what it’s like to be a reporter.
With that said, no experience or Spring 2026 candidate tryouts specific field of study is required, just a desire to learn, write and share your work. Working with The Chanticleer provides a great opportunity to gain experience and build resumes as well as portfolios. Not only this, but working with The Chanticleer allows you to connect with the campus community in ways you might have otherwise, meet cool people and learn new things.
A majority of The Chanticleer staff have graduated from the candidate class. Some of us didn’t have any experience in journalism prior, but the candidate class was enough to get us comfortable in the field. The class
helped us get to where we are today by providing an overall introduction to the journalism field as well as a
strategic course on how to write like a reporter.
These tryouts will take place in the newsroom, located in the Lib Jackson Student Union, suite B205, on Tuesday Jan. 20, Wednesday Jan. 21 and Thursday Jan. 22 from 5 -7:30 p.m. Interviews with current staff members will occur once the written portion is complete
