As someone who has spent lots of time in fandom spaces in recent years, there is a prevailing belief that communities for fans have largely died out and that the few remaining fandom spaces are embarrassing to be part of.
The Heated Rivalrave strongly suggests the opposite: Fandom events remain vibrant and inclusive. At these events, individuals have a safe space to gather and celebrate shows like “Heated Rivalry,” allowing fandoms a space to grow, foster and bring people together.
Last week I attended a “Heated Rivalry” themed club night at the House of Blues, hosted by live entertainment group Club 90s. Events referred to as Heated Rivalraves have taken place globally since the queer Canadian television show last aired.
Along with the LGBTQ+ community, this show rapidly became extremely popular among women in general due to the realistic and fully realized romantic relationship between the two male leads, coupled with some decidedly steamy encounters.
As a fan of “Heated Rivalry” since its debut and a reader of the book series, I thought the event was fantastic.
There were many people in attendance, and it was amazing to be in a space that was so accepting and vibrant. I was able to freak out with so many other fans of the show over TikTok edits that have been keeping the fandom alive since the last episode of season one aired on Dec. 26, 2025.
Before the show started, songs from the show’s soundtrack played, and a large countdown was put on the screen 15 minutes before the start, building major anticipation. When the countdown ended, the room filled with cheers as DJ Naajbby took the stage and got the show started.
Throughout the night, fans danced to fan-made edits that played alongside a variety of popular music. The DJ kept the crowd engaged by dancing, singing and inviting people on stage.
In fact, I eventually found myself onstage, dancing with other equally excited fans. This moment was a highlight of the night for me.
From my vantage point on stage, the sense of connection among fans was clear. I was able to see how influential this television show, event and these special moments had on the people in the crowd and on stage.
About halfway through the event, local drag queen Xa’Mona was brought out and given some time to perform. She spent a few minutes on the stage as well as in the crowd performing to a mashup of many different Ariana Grande hits.
The event concluded with a message emphasizing acceptance and inclusion, reinforcing Club 90s’ focus on creating welcoming spaces.
Attendees cheered, chanted and danced together, creating a strong sense of community and togetherness that was truly unmatched.
