Coastal Carolina’s women’s soccer head coach announced her departure from the program after four years with the Chants.
On Feb. 18 head coach Jo Chubb officially announced she would move forward to pursue other opportunities. Throughout her time leading the program, Chubb guided the Chanticleers to the Sun Belt Championship semifinals in 2024. This was the program’s first appearance at that stage since 2017, resulting in a turning point for the team.
According to a press release published on GoCCUSports, Chubb reflected on her time at Coastal.
“I want to thank the entire Coastal Women’s Soccer staff for their commitment to our student-athletes and their belief in the vision we built together,” Chubb said. “Most importantly, I’m deeply thankful for the players I’ve had the privilege to coach. They are an exceptional group, and being part of their growth and journey has meant more to me than I can fully express.”
The Coastal women’s soccer program is currently conducting a nationwide search for Chubb’s replacement. Associate Coach Nikki Brown and Assistant Coach Nick Benson remain Coastal’s official coaching staff, while an interim head coach has not been named.
Players reflected on their time with Chubb and said she encouraged conditioning to strengthen their mental and physical games, which contributed to their still growing success.
“She really, honestly just built up my character and honestly, my mental toughness,” Goalkeeper Aris Lamanna said. “It’s made me grow as a player in ways that I don’t think that I would have been able to do without her pushing me that way.”
Teammates said Chubb didn’t shy away from any of her players; treating them equally and promoting their individual skill sets. Her 2025 lineup, which capitalized on player-led strategies, secured its place in the record books with an NCAA-leading seven-match tie streak while also setting a new Sun Belt Conference record for ties in league play.
“She created a good environment for people feeling comfortable in the team and especially for people, like internationals, like me,” Defender Eefje Botjër said. “Having the feeling that you have a voice and, that the team trusts each other was very important for me.”
Before receiving her position at Coastal, Chubb had worked as an assistant coach for the Arizona State University Sun Devils and the South Alabama Jaguars. During her time with Arizona State, Chubb helped lead the Sun Devils to two NCAA Division I Championship Tournament appearances, first in 2020 and then in 2022.
