Coastal Carolina University’s Kimbel Library is undergoing major renovations aimed at transforming the late 1970s building into a modern and versatile learning space for students and faculty alike.
Associate University Librarian Jennifer Hughes shared how what began as an HVAC update quickly transformed into a major overhaul with the approval of a 15.5-million-dollar budget from the university’s board of trustees. She said the renovations are part of an attempt to improve campus facilities and enhance academic support.
“Thompson is really going to be for freshman as they’re getting acquainted with campus and getting academic support and then when they reach the level of needing more spaces to focus, Kimbel will be there,” Hughes said.
The renovation plans include 11 new study rooms and a quiet study section featuring 20 individual cubbies and large tables. In addition, there will be graduate-student-only study spaces, a special collections and university archive room, two all gender bathrooms and a lactation room.
Lexi Raines, a senior English major, experienced Kimbel Library pre-renovation and has high hopes for the improvements the major overhaul will bring.
“I think having a second library space will be a good addition to campus because Thompson is really overcrowded, making it hard to find seating or a quiet space to study,” Raines said. “One of the things I have missed most from Kimble was the silent study spaces, but what I really hope the renovation will bring is more physical books on campus.”
University administrators have emphasized that the renovation reflects CCU’s commitment to student success and academic excellence. By modernizing Kimbel Library, the university aims to preserve its historical significance while adapting it for future generations of Chanticleers.
“We have adapted our learning spaces to fit different learning styles. Some people say that Thompson library feels more like an airport, but our goal is to have something for everyone,” University Librarian Melvin Davis said.
While an official reopening date has not been announced, Davis said he hopes for an unveiling in March.
