Every year on Nov. 11, the nation pauses to honor the men and women who have served in the United States Armed Forces. Veterans Day is a time to recognize the courage, dedication and sacrifice of all who have worn the uniform in the past and present.
A Brief History of Veterans Day
Veterans Day originated as Armistice Day, marking the end of World War I when hostilities ceased on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918. In 1954, following World War II and the Korean War, Congress officially changed the name to Veterans Day to honor American veterans of all wars. Unlike Memorial Day, which honors those who gave their lives in service, Veterans Day celebrates all U.S. military veterans — living and deceased — who have served with honor.
Why Veterans Day Matters
Veterans Day is more than a federal holiday, it’s a reminder of the values that unite the nation: duty, service, and commitment to something greater than oneself. It’s an opportunity for communities to reflect on the freedoms made possible by those who have defended them and to express gratitude to veterans for their sacrifices and contributions in both military and civilian life. On college campuses across the country, including here at Coastal Carolina University, Veterans Day offers a chance to recognize the unique strengths that student veterans and military-connected students bring to academic life.
Supporting Military-Connected Students at Coastal Carolina University
Coastal Carolina University is proud to serve those who have served through the dedicated efforts of Military and Veteran Services. Our office provides comprehensive support to student veterans, active-duty service members, reservists, Guardsmen and military family members, ensuring they have the tools and resources to succeed academically and personally.
We assist students with VA education benefits, including the GI Bill®, Tuition Assistance and other military-affiliated programs. Staff also provide transition support, helping veterans adjust from military to academic life, and connect them with campus and community resources to promote overall well-being.
Continuing the Commitment
This Veterans Day, I encourage everyone at CCU to show their respect in ways that are sincere and thoughtful. Here are a few suggestions:
- Pause for Reflection: Take a moment to reflect on the sacrifices made by veterans, including the challenges they and their families may have faced.
- Educate and Engage: Incorporate discussions about the history and significance of Veterans Day in classes or meetings, as appropriate, to build awareness and understanding.
- Participate in Community Events: The Myrtle Beach and surrounding communities host events or observances to honor veterans. We invite you to participate or volunteer, showing your appreciation and commitment to those who have served.
This Veterans Day, let’s take time to remember that freedom is not only defended on battlefields; it’s sustained every day by the values our veterans uphold and the communities, like ours at CCU, that stand behind them.
