Loyal partygoers know of the gravestone that used to dwell at the entrance of Crooked Floor Tavern and read: “Here lies One N’ Done.” The decor likely made for fun business-rivalry ironically reminded me of the bar building’s refusal to die.
Coastal students have been excited for a “new” country bar opening near campus, Rowdy Rooster, but let’s not forget the building’s past, the darkness lurking beneath its foundation.
Dating back to 2012, this same college bar has been renovated five times. It was first Might as Well Bar and Grill, then One N Done, The Union Bar, Cosmos and now Rowdy Rooster.
Even if you don’t believe in ghosts, you can’t deny the unsettling past of this bar, and if you are denying it, allow me to take you through a series of unfortunate events.
A bar named Might as Well Bar and Grill sat at the bend of U.S. Highway 544 and West Cox Ferry Road over a decade ago, the current location of Rowdy Rooster. According to a 2012 article by The Sun News, Coastal Carolina University discussed pursuing legal action against the bar after a history of alcohol violations. The bar voluntarily closed before legal action was filed.
In 2020, the bar was renovated as another bar called One N Done.
The first night of my freshman year, my roommates and I ventured out to One N Done. Many drinks were had, we danced and we laughed, but that would be the one and only time we’d walk through those doors.
A few weeks into the semester, students began mocking its name and gossiping that the bartenders were spiking students’ drinks. I mean, let’s be real here. The name “One N Done” was just too easy to mock. But who knows, maybe it wasn’t just gossip.
Understandably, nobody wanted to find out if these rumors were true or not. People stopped going, and the bar eventually closed.
Coming back for sophomore year, a bar reopened at this same location, this time as The Union Bar. According to WMBF, around midnight on April 29, 2023, a fourteen-year-old was shot and killed in The Union’s parking lot.
The Union shut down.
To no surprise, a fourth bar opened at this location the following year, known as Cosmos.
Cosmos became a popular hangout spot last year. While the three previous bars’ reasons were not publicly announced, Cosmos is the only one that closed without following a suspicious or tragic event.
It is unclear throughout these renovations who the bar owners were, if they remain the same, and most importantly, what led to the closures and eventually the renovations.
There are rumors of the property having been a strip club before bars. If that’s the case, maybe it should have stayed that way. Whether it is true or not, you can’t deny the land is cursed.
