Classes are still in session Sept. 27 at Coastal Carolina University despite a tornado watch until 6 p.m. in parts of Conway, and tornado warnings in parts of Myrtle Beach.
The University Marketing and Communication sent out an email yesterday with updates about preparation for Hurricane Helene. The email said they don’t foresee any changes in the University’s operations.
Despite the University’s decision today, Horry County Schools is having an e-learning day, and local daycares have closed. No official alerts have been sent about the storm this morning.
Students are going to Yik Yak, an anonymous social media platform, to air out their grievances.
“There’s no way Coastal is expecting me to drive a half hour to campus with this wind,” said one Yik Yak user. “Are you serious?”
In Conway this morning, the south wind is 24 to 29 mph with wind gusts up to 45 mph, according to the National Weather Service. Wind is expected to decrease by this afternoon.
In yesterday’s email, the University said CCU’s Emergency Management Executive Group will be in contact with Horry County Government to provide updates.
