Draft declaration signals future to former Chants

Four Coastal Carolina University football players have declared their spots for the 2024 NFL draft from April 25 to 27.

Among those who declared were wide receiver Sam Pinckney, safety Clayton Isbell, defensive lineman Micheal Mason and defensive lineman Kennedy Roberts. Sam is one of the most anticipated players from Coastal Carolina going into the draft, with 1,027 total receiving yards and eight touchdowns.

Safety Dre Pinckney believes Mason will also be a valuable yet underrated contender in the draft.

“Mike Mason…we know what he is capable of, and he is going to do a good job,” Dre said.

Mason had a successful 2023 season, with 43 assisted tackles and 67 total touchdowns, as did Isbell with 13 tackles, one sack and three interceptions.

In the 2023 season, Isbell had a total of 89 tackles. Of those 89, 49 were solo and assisted on 40 with one sack. He goes into the draft with three interceptions returned for a total of 29 yards, his longest return, and five pass deflections.

Roberts, who is also up for grabs, had 21 total touchdowns this season along with 18 assisted tackles, pushing him to a higher level than most players. However, his declaration surprised freshman marine science major Hadley Selman.

“I have never seen linemen go super high. There is always more like the lower middle draft, just because linemen are usually overlooked unless it is necessary,” Hadley said. “They are good players and they will be highly valued once they find whatever team they go to.”
