Women’s basketball falls to Mountaineers

The Coastal Carolina University (CCU) women’s basketball team fell to their rivals of Appalachian State University (App State) Mountaineers on the night of Jan. 21, 74-81.

Coastal started the game strong, ending the first quarter with a lead of 18-14. Later in the second quarter, the Chanticleers went on a 7-0 run taking a 44-32 lead with one minute and 57 seconds left in the quarter. Following the CCU run, App State strung together a couple of baskets to cut the lead down to 44-38.

Th e Chanticleers struggled in the third quarter and were only able to score six points. Th e Mountaineers took advantage of CCU’s offensive struggle, ending the third quarter up 50-60. Coastal cut the lead down to two with a little over six minutes left in the game but was never able to take the lead allowing App State to win the game.

Coastal shot efficiently from the field, making 50% of their shots but struggled to protect the ball with 23 turnovers. App State was lights out from behind the arc making 48% of their attempts. Free throws were huge for the Mountaineers hitting 19 of their 21 attempts.

CCU had three players finish with double-digits in scoring. Sophomore Angie Juste-Jean led the team with 21 points. Senior Aja Blount finished with 19 points, while freshman Anaya Barney ended with 11.

Blount also finished the game with her fourth double-double performance of the season with 19 points and 12 rebounds.

With this loss, the Coastal Carolina women’s basketball team falls to 9-10 on the season and tied 4-4 in conference play. Coastal Carolina is currently tied for eighth place in the Sun Belt Conference.

Coastal Carolina will be looking to get back on track back at home when they play James Madison University on Jan. 26.
