Men’s basketball takes down Monarchs

The Coastal Carolina University (CCU) men’s basketball team defeated the Old Dominion University (ODU) Monarchs on the night of Jan. 12, 67-66.

It was a close game all throughout the first half. At the end of the first, the Monarchs were barely leading the Chanticleers 28-25.

CCU found themselves making an anticipated comeback in the second half. The Monarchs appeared to be pulling away from the Chanticleers after a good start to the second half when CCU led by 11 points with only nine minutes remaining in the game.

Coastal clawed their way back into the last minutes and outscored ODU 29-16, coming away victorious. The last point for the Chanticleers to take the lead came from senior Linton Brown. Brown made three straight free throws in the last seconds of the game to give Coastal the lead and victory.

The Chanticleers struggled to make baskets, only making 31% of their attempts. However, they got their money’s worth at the free-throw line by scoring 18 of them.

Brown led the team in scoring with 14 total points, shooting 44% from the field. Additionally, junior Essam Mostafa finished with his 11th double-double of the season with 13 points and 16 total rebounds. With his double-double on Thursday night, Mostafa is now tied for the third most in the nation.

Three other Chanticleers finished with double-digit points. Sophomore Josh Uduje finished with 12 points. Both Senior Antonio Daye and Junior Kylan Blackmon also finished with 11 points.

With this win, Coastal is now 8-8 and 2-3 in the Sun Belt Conference (SBC). CCU is currently tied for eighth place in the SBC.

The CCU men’s basketball team will be back at the HTC Center to take on the Appalachian State University Mountaineers on Jan. 19.
