Quarterback Grayson McCall falls and suffers a foot injury after being tackled during the rival game against Appalachian State University.

Senior quarterback Bryce Carpenter will temporarily lead the Coastal Carolina University football offense after Grayson McCall was sidelined last week with an injury.

Head coach Jamey Chadwell announced that McCall is expected to miss three to six weeks due to a foot injury.

Chadwell announced in a news conference on Nov. 9 that Carpenter, who is from Sarasota, Florida, has appeared in five of the Chanticleers’ nine games this season. Carpenter’s powerhouse running ability will be a bonus as he takes on the quarterback position. On 27 rushing attempts this season, Carpenter has rushed for 80 yards and a touchdown. The senior has also completed two of four pass attempts on the year for 31 yards and a touchdown against Appalachian State University last weekend on Nov. 3.

With McCall set to miss time, Carpenter will look to lead the Chanticleers to a win over Southern Miss on Saturday, Nov. 12 at 7:30 p.m. at Brooks Stadium.

McCall posted “I’ll be back. GODSPEED” on his Twitter account on Nov. 9 about being sidelined.

McCall’s foot injury occurred as the Chants sported a 21-14 lead with 12 minutes remaining in the third quarter during last Thursday’s game against App State. McCall dropped back in the pocket to attempt a third down throw for a first down. The pass was completed short of the first down markers, but this was the least of the team’s worries.

He suffered the foot injury when he was tackled but stayed and grinded out the remainder of the game. McCall finished 18 of 26 for 253 yards and two touchdowns.  With the win, Coastal improved to 8-1 on the season.

Carpenter started two games last season when McCall was out with injuries. With Carpenter as quarterback, Chanticleers went 1-1 and beat Georgia Southern University away and lost to them at home.

In the 42-40 loss versus Georgia State, Carpenter completed 17 of 29 passes for 233 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. He also rushed 17 times for 12 yards. In the road win against Georgia Southern, the quarterback threw for 85 yards and a touchdown on 13 of 20 passing, while also rushing for 44 yards and a touchdown on 13 attempts.
