Hole in one for men’s golf: Chants bring home win from North Carolina

The men’s golf team was victorious in the J.T. Poston Invitational at the Country Club of Sapphire Valley in North Carolina.

The team started the tournament hot by taking the lead in the first two rounds. The Chanticleers were able to secure the victory by shooting one under par. Their score was enough to beat second-place Western Carolina University by two strokes.

Seth Taylor, senior, said the team was confident they could win the tournament after the first two rounds.

“Coach told us to be confident and expand on our lead, so that’s what we did in the third round,” Taylor said.

First-year Head Coach Jacob Wilmer also got his first team win of the season and first with the school. It was the first team win for Coastal since 2021. Taylor talked about how it felt great to have another victory for the whole team in a tournament.

“It’s great anytime you get a team win because that’s what college golf is all about, the team part. So it was awesome,” Taylor said.

The Chanticleers ended the tournament with three golfers finishing in the top three for individual scoring in the place shooting two under. Both Super Seniors Tyler Gray and Connor Newton tied for third shooting one under.

The men’s golf team will be back in action at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate on Oct. 9 through 11.
