Chants clobber the Bulls

Coastal beat the Buffalo Bulls Sept. 17 the Chants are 3-0 for the season.

On Saturday, the Chants triumphed over the University at Buffalo Bulls in a tough battle, winning the game 38-26 and improving their record to 3-0.

The Chanticleer offensive unit struggled at first, with four turnovers in the first half. All four of these were fumbles. Going into the half, the Chants trailed the Bulls 14-16. After allowing a field goal to start the third quarter, Coastal was down 14-19. The Chants then flipped the switch, however, and scored 17 unanswered points to take a 31-19 lead with 12 minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. Both teams scored one more touchdown, leading to a final score of 38 for the Chants and 26 for the Bulls.

Quarterback Grayson McCall completed 16 of 24 passes for 251 yards and three touchdowns. On the season, McCall has completed 50 of 71 passes for 733 yards, nine touchdowns, and one interception, while also tallying up 21 carries for 53 yards and another touchdown. Averaging more than three total touchdowns per game and just one turnover all season, McCall is on pace for another stellar season.

CJ Beasley led the Chants on the ground, with nine carries for 89 yards and a touchdown. Beasley also brought in three receptions for 74 yards and another touchdown.

Defensively, the Chanticleers came away with four turnovers, two fumbles and two interceptions. Redshirt junior Jahmar Brown, who had previously played at the University of South Carolina, recovered both of these fumbles and returned one for a touchdown. Senior cornerbacks D’Jordan Strong and Jacob Proche came away with one interception each.

Proche was excited to have been able to provide an opportunity for his offense, and he has high hopes for next week’s game.

“I knew that as they were hitting those double moves, they were giving us hitches throughout the first half. It really came down to staying disciplined,” Proche said. “I was excited not just for me but for my team, since the offense was able to score right after that.”

The Chanticleers play next at 7:30 p.m. at Georgia State this Thursday, Sept. 22.
