Sun Belt Conference recap

The Sun Belt Conference showed why they should not be overlooked this past weekend. The conference went 10-4 in week two of the season, including two AP Top Ten and a Big Ten upset.

Every Sun Belt team played on Saturday, Sept. 10, but no one could have expected what happened next. The day started off with only one of four Sun Belt teams winning. Then the mid-afternoon games kicked off, and the rest is history.

App State and Marshall were heavy underdogs going into the weekend, as they were both on the road and going up against No. 6 Texas A&M and No. 8 Notre Dame. The App State Mountaineers and Marshall University Thundering Herd came out firing on all cylinders with hard-fought defense leading them to shocking victories against two college football powerhouses. Texas A&M dropped all the way down to No. 24 in the rankings, and Notre Dame completely dropped out of the Top 25.

The Sun Belt finished the day with convincing wins from James Madison, Texas State, Louisiana Monroe and Troy, with Old Dominion being the only team to lose in the night games.

Marshall and App State were voted just outside the AP Top 25 in this week’s rankings, but can still see themselves ranked next week. Texas State and ULM have opportunities this weekend to pull off upset victories of their own. Texas State is at No. 17 Baylor, and ULM is at No. 2 Alabama this weekend.
