Coastal forms a wall to defend JMU’s close free kick.

The women’s soccer team lost 0-1 against the new Sun Belt member, James Madison University Dukes, on Sept. 16.

The Chanticleers controlled the game early on, holding the ball and keeping possession for the bulk of the first half.

With 32 minutes and 11 seconds left in the first half, Coastal’s Gianna Irungaray took a shot from outside the box that was going toward the top left corner but was tipped over the crossbar by JMU goalkeeper Alexandra Blom. A minute later, CCU forward Megan Brouse received a yellow card for a hard foul on a JMU center back.

The first half ended 0-0 as neither team could pull away and put the ball in the back of the net.

The first and only goal of the game came in the fifty-fifth minute when JMU’s Lidia Nduka collected a through ball from Amanda Attanasi, dribbled past Coastal goalie Hope Morrow and placed it in the bottom right corner. Nduka’s goal put the Dukes up 1-0.

The Chanticleers couldn’t manage to get the ball passed JMU’s Blom and the game ended in a 0-1 defeat.

The team is now 1-5-2 on the season and looks to get back on track tonight in an away game at App State.
