In a game filled with fireworks at the plate, Coastal Carolina University softball sealed a 7-1 victory over Purdue University Fort Wayne on Saturday, Feb. 8.
The Mastodons struck first with a solo home run in the second inning from Addison Zimpleman, who recorded the team’s only two hits of the game. That would be the only bright spot for the Mastodons as the Chanticleers answered in the third inning with back-to-back home runs: a two-run blast by Utility Libby Pippin, followed by a solo shot from third base Delaney Keith.
Pitcher Nicolette Picone settled in after Zimpleman’s early blast, retiring eight straight batters and keeping the Mastodons off balance.
From there, the Chanticleers took full control. Utility Reese Collier extended the lead with a solo home run in the fourth and added an RBI single in the sixth. Shortstop Brie Normandin was a consistent force at the plate, going a perfect 3-for-3 with three singles to help power Coastal Carolina’s offense.
With the win, Coastal Carolina improved to 2-1 to start the season.
