Now that you’re an alumnus (well… almost) of Coastal Carolina University, that means you are ready to enter the adult world, right? I even bet that you have a job lined up right after graduation, right? Heck, I would even bet it all and say that after four long years in college, you know exactly what you want to do with the rest of your life, right? If you answered “no way” to any of those statements, then you’re in luck. I have some tips that will hopefully make you feel ready for life after graduation!

  1. Break larger goals into smaller goals. It’s easy when you’re in college to know what you’re working toward– getting your degree. However, once you graduate, you no longer have that clear cut goal at the end of the tunnel. Take time to think about what you want to accomplish in the big picture and break that goal into small, obtainable chunks.
  1. Keep learning. I’m keeping this tip very vague because there are SO many different interpretations for this one. Whether it be in the literal sense of continuing your education with graduate school, or just taking the time to learn who you are as a person– having a passion for learning is crucial for both your personal and professional goals.
  1. Accept that plans will change. Graduating from college won’t be the last time you go through a big life transition. For example, you might land a job at the company that you always imagined working for but later yearn for change after a few years. Just remember: Career changes are valid and are common for recent college graduates.
  1. Be open to new opportunities.  This one goes in tandem with the last tip. Don’t be afraid to apply for positions that may be outside of your comfort zone. If the job posting sounds interesting, apply! The same can be said for general life experiences. New experiences can open the door to new opportunities!
  1. Take advantage of the resources available to you. One thing that makes CCU Career Services stand out compared to other universities is the fact that our office serves both students AND alumni. Whether it be a month or several years after graduating, our services are at your disposal *cough cough* and they’re free!

Career Services is dedicated to providing alumni with a wide range of job search strategies, preparing them for graduate school and offering support for any career changes! Congrats to the class of 2024– and remember, once a Chant, always a Chant!
