Coastal Carolina University’s win against rival Appalachian State University on Nov. 7 had students and fans rush to the field to celebrate their 38-24 win with the team.
Coastal Carolina Athletics donated a semi-truck filled with goods to Boone, North Carolina, where App State is located for Hurricane Helene relief.
Starting the game, running back Braydon Bennett had the first two rushing touchdowns in the first quarter from quarterback Ethan Vasko. The first touchdown had 10:40 seconds left of the quarter, and the second with 3:03 seconds left.
“I’m gonna do what I have to do for the team,” Bennett said.
Defensive back Courtney Eubanks made his first interception of the season with 50 seconds left in the first quarter. This would also make it Coastal’s fifth interception of the season.
Appalachian State (App State) started scoring in the second quarter with a 38-yard field goal from kicker Jackson Moore. Two-and-a-half minutes later, running back Ahmani Marshall had a two-yard rushing touchdown to score for App State.
In the fourth quarter, bandit Clev Lubin executed two sacks.
“Those are the moments you live for. You get a chance to make a play there’s no better opportunity,” Lubin said in the post-game conference.
App State kept the pressure on CCU to earn the win, as the last App State touchdown was by wide receiver Kaedin Robinson making a 25-yard pass from quarterback Joey Aguilar.
“What a great game. I just can’t say enough how proud I am of the players and coaching,” head coach Tim Beck said. “We played with passion, and we played hard. It was a great victory.”
In the opening ceremony, former cornerback Josh Norman made an appearance and led a cheer for the Chants. Norman, the Marrio & Josh Norman Field House namesake, ended his career at Coastal as an All-American and All-Big South Conference award winner in 2011. After college, he joined the NFL; starting with the Washington Commanders and now plays for the Buffalo Bills.
Later in the game, Coastal brought the women’s lacrosse team onto the field to celebrate their NCAA tournament qualification for the first time in program history– which they achieved last season.
Former quarterback of the Chanticleers, Grayson McCall, made an appearance on the field during the game. McCall retired recently from his football career at North Carolina State University due to a serious head injury.
