Bowl eligible team: Head Coach Jamey Chadwell on team’s performance so far

The Coastal Carolina University football team has started their 20th season strong with one of the best records in college football consisting of six consecutive wins so far.

The team is 28-3 since the start of the 2020 college football season, which is tied for the second best of all teams at the NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision level. Coastal is also tied for the second longest winning streak
in college football following behind the Clemson University Tigers who have won 11 straight games.

Quarterback Grayson McCall has led the way offensively with 1,336 passing yards, 14 touchdowns and only one interception. Running back CJ Beasley has also had an amazing start to the 2022 season with 409 rushing yards and two touchdowns. This includes his hurdle in the fourth quarter which gave Coastal the lead against Georgia Southern.

Head Coach Jamey Chadwell talked about how he thinks McCall has seen improvement as the season continues.

“I think he’s letting the game come to him now like he has always been instead of trying to press too much,” Chadwell said. “He’s trusting in his players to make some plays for him, and they’ve been doing that for him. I think he’s playing at a high level right now.”

Coastal Carolina’s “Black Swarm” defense has also played outstanding, tied for first in forcing turnovers in the FBS with 15 on the season.

Coach Chadwell said all the turnovers the defense has forced has been a huge factor in the team’s hot start.

“Against teams like Gardner Webb and Buffalo, our offense couldn’t move the ball at all. But our defense was getting us turnovers and kept us in the game,” Chadwell said. “In key moments, those turnovers have been big for us.”

The Chants look to continue their success as their schedule gets tougher as the season progresses.
