Women’s basketball closes out regular season with a loss to Troy at home
On Senior Day and the last regular-season game of the year, the women’s basketball team suffered a 71-58 loss to Troy.
The one spotlight for the game, however, was Senior forward Aja Blount who was dominant throughout the contest, having game-highs in points, 20, and rebounds, 17.
Although the Chants lost this game, they have a lot to be happy about. They improved in every aspect from their previous season. After finishing their 2020-21 season with an overall record of 3-15, the Chants had a complete turnaround and finished this regular season with an overall record of 14-10, and an impressive 11-4 record at home.
Blount led the team in scoring and rebounding, averaging 18.7 PPG and 9.7 RPG, finishing second in the Sun Belt Conference in both statistics. Blayre Shultz and Tyra Brown were dominant from beyond the arc, combining for 53 total 3-pointers made during the regular season. Janeen Camp controlled the paint on defense with 46 total blocks and an average of 1.9 BPG, also finishing second in the conference in both statistics.
The team finished tied-for-first in the conference in average scoring margin per game for the regular season with plus-11.7 in the category.
The Sun Belt Conference head coaches took notice of Blount’s stellar regular season, naming her to the All-Sun Belt first team. She averaged a double-double in conference play, with 19.1 PPG and 10.5 RPG. Blount, who was also voted to the conference’s Preseason All-Sun Belt First Team, proved to everyone that she was among the conference’s elite.
The Chants look to build on their impressive 2021-22 campaign in the 2022 Hercules Tires Sun Belt Women’s Basketball Championship, where they will face Arkansas State.
