Creating a green thumb in celebration of Earth month
Earth Month is already underway, and Earth Day is fast approaching. Throughout the month, Coastal and the city of Conway have worked together to promote a cleaner city and earth.
Every week in April there is a different event with topics on sustainability, awareness, and keeping the community clean. Here is a breakdown of what is left.
On Wednesday, April 20 there was an earth fair and farmers market held on Prince Lawn from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. Sponsored by Sustain Coastal and Waccamaw Market Cooperative, local businesses and farmers set up for students, faculty, and staff to purchase goods. Students also had the opportunity to come and relax by participating in crafts that were offered at the fair.
Then at 6 p.m. the same day, students joined the CCU Love Blue Chapter in a beach clean-up. The group picked up litter that affects our wildlife and impacts the local watersheds.
Thursday, April 21 Coastal announced this day will serve as the inaugural John Brong Campus Planting Day at Blanton Park in front of the Edward M. Singleton Building. This day is to honor the late John Brong who served as groundskeeper on campus for nearly 20 years.
Brong always wanted a day for the CCU community to come together outside and give back to a place we all love. There will be three-hour long opportunities for students to participate. One must register for this event and all supplies will be provided.
Friday, April 22 at the Waccamaw National Wildlife Refuge, join Sustain Coastal in a hike outside for Earth Day. The refuge is located behind University Place and the hike will take place at 2 p.m.
To continue celebrating earth month, if one completes any service project in the month of April and logs it into the Earth Month Tracking form, they can reserve a free earth month t-shirt and pick it up during the Earth Fair at the Sustain Coastal tent.
For a complete list of other events being offered, check the CCU email and look for updates from Sustain Coastal.
