All colleges and universities welcome recognition for the accomplishments of their staff and faculty that go above and beyond what is expected while serving students. Schools proudly announce recognitions and share the news on campus, locally and often nationally, while spotlighting and thanking the applicable office, staff and faculty responsible for the accomplishments.
In the work of serving military-connected students, the most widely recognizable recognition is attained by scoring well on surveys that are intended to measure if a school is military friendly and rank each school nationally and regionally.
Coastal Carolina University has been recognized for many years as a “military friendly” school by multiple surveys that measure if a school deserves this honor. Several offices across campus provide input for these surveys to ensure the accuracy of our survey responses. Their input is much appreciated!
At Coastal Carolina, being military friendly begins with access to resources. Military and Veteran Services provides direct assistance with VA education benefits, federal tuition and state programs, ensuring students can make full use of the benefits they have earned.
Beyond administrative help, the office also offers a welcoming space where students can connect with peers who understand their experiences.
Community is another critical element. The Student Veterans Association (SVA) serves as a hub for camaraderie, advocacy and involvement. Through events, service projects and collaborations, the SVA helps military-connected students build relationships with one another and with the broader CCU community. These efforts promote belonging, reduce isolation and encourage student success.
Equally important is the commitment of faculty and staff across campus. Green Zone training, for example, equips employees with the awareness and tools they need to better support military-connected students in classrooms, offices and services. This reinforces the idea that every Chanticleer has a role to play in fostering a culture of understanding and respect.
Ultimately, being a military friendly school is about more than recognition; it’s about responsibility. For Coastal Carolina University, it means ensuring that military-connected students are not only welcomed but fully supported as they pursue their goals. By providing resources, cultivating community and empowering faculty and staff to engage meaningfully, CCU lives out its commitment to helping these students succeed as part of the Chanticleer family.
