Coastal Carolina was never able to get going Saturday night, falling 47-7 to Old Dominion in a game that went off the rails early and never came back.
According to ESPN+, the Monarchs came out sharp, moving the ball efficiently with short passes and balanced runs.
Old Dominion quarterback Colton Joseph got the party started with a deep connection to Tre Brown and capped off the opening drive with a touchdown throw to wide receiver Na’eem Abdul-Rahim Gladding.
Coastal’s offense, on the other hand, never found their spark.
Two early drops and a quick three-and-out killed their first chance to respond.
The defense held for a few minutes, but Joseph and Brown kept carving up the secondary. Brown finished the first quarter with nearly 90 yards as Old Dominion took a 10-0 lead.
As the second quarter kicked off Coastal’s offense continued in their rut while mistakes piled high.
A penalty and more dropped passes pushed Coastal out of field-goal range, and Old Dominion made them pay immediately. Joseph hit running back Ke’Travion Hargrove on a short jump pass that turned into an 80-yard touchdown, swinging all the momentum back to the Monarchs.
CCU quarterback Tad Hudson showed tenacity with a few tough runs and a long completion to tight end Brooks Johnson, but an interception on the next drive killed any momentum.
Old Dominion continued to roll, as Joseph and Gladding connected for two more touchdowns before halftime.
By the break, Coastal trailed 34-0 and couldn’t find any answers.
The second half didn’t bring much change.
Joseph broke loose for a long touchdown run early in the third quarter to make it 41-0, and the Monarchs later added another field goal.
Coastal finally found the end zone in the fourth quarter when Hudson hit Cameron Wright on a short slant for the team’s only score of the night. The defense forced a turnover late, but it was far too late to matter.
Old Dominion tacked on one final field goal to close out the blowout, 47-7.
Coastal will look to improve their game play against ULM on Saturday, Oct.11 with kickoff beginning at 7 p.m. in Springs Brooks Stadium.
