Coastal Carolina’s women’s soccer team tied the Appalachian State Mountaineers 1-1, Thursday night, extending their streak of three straight draws.
To start the match, the Chants held both strong offense and defense, but they fell short as the Mountaineers scored within the first 27 minutes.
However, as a response to the goal, forward Eleanor Ashton settled the score and brought the Chants up to tie, 1-1.
Following Ashton’s goal, Coastal put most of their effort into defending the net from the Mountaineers’ numerous attempts to score.
Goalkeeper Vivienne Carr played all 90 minutes, defending the Chants from six shots to preserve the tie. The Chants held the Mountaineers to one goal, despite eight fouls, while only committing three themselves.
Head coach Jo Chubb said the team is preparing for their upcoming match against Texas State by looking at mistakes from the past.
“We’ve learned from a lot of mistakes that we made last year, like we do every day. We’ll think about ourselves first, we’ll keep worrying about our performance, keep working on that, and hopefully the results take care of themselves,” Chubb said.
Coach Chubb noted that the team has strong leaders who prioritize accountability and the best interest of the team.
The Chants will lean on leaders like defender Eefje Bötjer, a Preseason All Sun Belt team selection, who highlighted the teams’ communication and hard work ethic.
“I’m pretty excited about the game, to show that we can actually beat them. Because even last year, I think we played pretty well and had good moments,” Bötjer said.
Forward Caitlyn Britt echoed the need to prepare for Texas State.
“They’re going to come at us the same intensity as they did last year. From watching it, as I was obviously not here yet, I think that they’re going to bring the pressure and we just need to be ready for that,” Britt said.
The Chanticleers now have a 3-4-4 record, heading into a critical Sun Belt match against Texas State, Sunday, Oct. 12. The match will mark the first encounter between the two teams since Coastal’s 4-0 defeat in the semifinals of the Sun Belt Tournament last season.
