Coastal Carolina University women’s volleyball lost against University of South Carolina in a five-set battle.
The match was neck-and-neck until South Carolina pulled ahead in the final set, clinching it 18-16.
Tonight’s result marks CCU’s second loss of the preseason.
Despite the loss, junior setter Jalyn Stout ended the game with 22 assists and six kills in an effort to advance the Chants.
“I wanted to win. There were a few times we could’ve won, so it’s a stuffy feeling, but still proud that we fought back,” Stout said.
South Carolina has beaten CCU in the past, and tonight the trend continued. Despite being in different divisions, both teams played a tough, competitive game.
Junior outside hitter Emily Fowler added 18 kills and just three errors. By the final set tensions were high, and both the crowd and players were energized.
“For me, I think it’s about focusing on the blocking and communicating with my teammates,” Fowler said.
Head Coach Steve Loeswick echoed the mindset of Fowler and her focus on the team, not the loss.
“We have to fall back on looking at those positive things that we did really well and can come back from,” Loeswick said.
Loeswick is entering his third year as head coach of the women’s team.
Since taking over, he earned Sun Belt Conference Coach of the Year in 2023. Under his coaching, Stout was named Sun Belt Freshman of the Year.
Despite the setback, the Chants will look to regroup at the Wildcat Classic, a three-day tournament, this weekend at Davidson University.
