Football season is finally here, and Coastal’s first big test comes on Saturday against the Virginia Cavaliers.
Ahead of the season opener, head coach Tim Beck gave some clarity on the quarterback room.
The quarterback competition looked a little different earlier in the offseason before Emmett Brown’s season-ending injury.
Beck admitted that Brown was very much in the mix, but once he went down, the staff had to shift things around.
“Since Brown’s injury, we’ve had some time now to alter some things and look at all the other QBs we have,” Beck said.
That adjustment period, according to Beck, gave other quarterbacks more opportunities to show what they can do.
With injuries and hard work, all signs point to first year, University of Maryland transfer, MJ Morris, taking the first snaps.
Beck has been impressed with what Morris has brought to the Chanticleers.
“MJ is a great leader for our guys,” Beck said. “I’ve watched him get better every day since he touched down on campus. He brings a lot of energy to our football team that we usually look for in a quarterback.”
College football teams normally settle with one starting quarterback for consistency in leadership and play stability. However, Coastal Carolina seems to have a different approach this season.
While Morris looks like the guy to lead the offense on Saturday, Beck hinted that fans might see more than one quarterback take the field, maybe even as many as three.
Beck added that energy from Morris is not just felt in the QB room, it’s something the whole roster has fed off.
It is clear the Chanticleers want to test their depth early and see what clicks as the season kicks off.
For Beck, the message is simple: the team has adjusted, the quarterbacks are ready and Coastal is prepared to make a statement in their season opener.
