History professor Florence Eliza Glaze was detained and escorted off Coastal Carolina University’s campus by the university’s Department of Public Safety (DPS) on the second day of the fall term.
Roughly around 2 p.m. on Aug. 21, a student observed and recorded Glaze being led out of Brittain Hall in between two DPS officers, with her hands noticeably behind her back. Posting the video to snapchat with the caption “Teach showed up hammered,” the student sent the video to Barstool CCU public Instagram page for publication.

Comments on the Instagram post and YikYak circulated quickly asking who “snitched” on the professor. While these comments are not directed at the recorder, but rather who called DPS, the following student will remain anonymous due to potential negativity.
The student told The Chanticleer that he was not in the class himself but witnessed the event from the lobby of Brittain Hall, waiting for a zoom call.
“She came stumbling in, and she takes like about five minutes just to walk from the entrance of the building, just like past me and towards her class,” they said.
The student said that fellow professors noticed Glaze stumbling as well and stopped her before she made it to the class. When DPS arrived within a few minutes, the fellow professors stated that Glaze had clearly been drinking, and they could smell it on her breath. The student heard DPS agree and escort outside in front of the building to conduct a field sobriety test.
“I can see them doing the whole thing,” the student said.
While she was taking the field sobriety test, Glaze’s students were dismissed from class.
“They let all of them out through the back door, so they don’t run into her. And then once they’re all out they bring her back and put her in that classroom, I guess to finish the test in private,” the student said.
Within a few moments DPS escorted Glaze out of the building in handcuffs.
At 2:35 p.m. Glaze was booked at J. Reuben Long Detention Center and charged with driving under the influence (DUI), where she was incarcerated overnight with no bail set. Since 6:30 a.m. this morning the Horry County Bookings and Releases has been updated, stating that Glaze was discharged with a bond of $992.
The nature and correlation of the DUI charge when she was present in class is being investigated.
The university’s Drug-Free Workplace and Alcohol Usage Policy for Employees, Volunteers and University Affiliates (FAST-222) states that “No employee shall report for duty or remain on duty under the influence of any illegal drugs, unauthorized prescription medication or alcohol.”
Abiding by the policy is a requirement of employment with the university, warning that “violation will be cause for disciplinary actions up to and including termination.”
The Chanticleer was previously able to determine that she was teaching a history class in Brittain 108 from 1:40 p.m. to 2:55 p.m. when she was escorted. Glaze’s fall instructed courses have since been removed from the self-service website. Her current employment status has not been publicly updated.
Four years ago, news sources such as WBTW and MyrtleBeachSC News reported that Glaze was arrested and charged with a DUI, disobeying a police officer and having an open container in the motor vehicle on June 1, 2021. This charge was believed to be dismissed, as yesterday’s arrest was booked as a first offense.
