Nice to meet you, Chants! We are The Chanticleer, a student run newspaper organization (that’s right, we’re just like all of you) serving as the mirror, watchdog and marketplace for Coastal Carolina University.
Here’s a quick breakdown:
As the mirror, we report and reflect what is happening on campus and in the community with full transparency.
As the watchdog, we keep people, organizations, companies and the university honest by holding them accountable. It is our job to share the truth, regardless of how pretty or ugly it may be.
Finally, as the marketplace, we are a space for students, staff and community members to share their stories, interests, and ideas.
We are whole-heartedly ready to be the best we can for the people of our university. Some stories share beautiful memories and exciting announcements.
For example, this summer has been filled with record baseball achievements as CCU baseball took us back to the World Series and made it as finalists as well. On Page #, you’ll see photos of kids and fans surrounding players at the Brooks Stadium Omaha sendoff, and the brotherhood that fills the team. Between that and quotes from throughout the community during the World Series, there’s no denying the heart that beats for CCU.
The Chanticleer was also lucky enough to have a former CCU baseball alumnus, Ryan McGraw, write a column sharing his thoughts on what Coastal baseball has become. McGraw played for Coastal during head coach Schnall’s early seasons of assistant coaching in the 2000s, making a unique and personal story that you can’t read anywhere else.
Moving forward, this fall calls for a new university president and brilliant oceanography professor who both are ambitious for Coastal growth.
On the other hand, you’ll also read about panicked parents sending their freshman to school in the midst of a university housing crisis, and how the university is responding to the craze.
And because the world isn’t as black and white as the newspaper, you’ll read stories that include a little bit of both.
On Page #, you’ll read about Social Justice Club’s call for transparency from university officials in terms of federal pushbacks, executive regulations and the unanswered questions regarding it all. You’ll also read how their call for action may have sparked a response.
I know it’s a lot; CCU has a lot to offer all around. But don’t worry, in the culture section you’ll find a lighthearted story about an emerging beekeeping club at CCU!
Incoming freshman, I know you’re tired of hearing it, but welcome to the real side of CCU and all its glory. We’ll give you a head’s up: the best way to prepare for college is by reading Mary’s Top 10 tips for Freshman on Page #. Also enjoy a crossword puzzle to introduce you to CCU culture!
