Coastal Carolina University baseball went head-to-head with Wake Forest University resulting in a 16-6 score after Coastal was mercy ruled in the 7th inning.
This game brought Chanticleer baseball to an overall record of 12-5 for the 2025 spring season.
The Chants defense set the tone early on as continuous fielding errors led to a 2-0 lead for the Demon Deacons. With morale low and mistakes high, the Chants were struggling to get a defensive upper hand against Wake Forest, one of the top 15 teams in the nation.
Coastal’s Caden Bodine boosted Chanticleer spirit with a home run deep to right field that brought in one run to bring the score to 2-1. Left fielder Sebastian Alexander had an RBI single that tied the game. The boost proved true until the 3rd inning where the Chants began their descent.
The Demon Deacons were shortly kept at bay with a scoreless 3rd inning thanks to pitcher Darin Horn. However, it was followed by treacherous 4th and 5th innings for the home team.
Wake Forest delivered numerous hits in the 4th and 5th innings to send six runners home, bringing the score to 15-4. Pitcher Hudson Lance finally shut down the Deacons’ reign with a strikeout in the 5th inning.
Despite efforts to come back, the Chants managed to bring the score to 16-6 in the 6th inning with two runs.
Isaiah Stoy, a Michigan native looking into Coastal Carolina’s baseball program, was empathetic to the Chants loss.
“They were struggling. A lot of pitchers got their innings and they played hard but going against a top team in the country is hard,” Stoy said.
The Chanticleers will return to Springs Brooks Stadium on March 14 against Georgia State University at 6 p.m. to begin their Sun Belt play.
