The Social Justice Club and supporters took to Prince Lawn at Coastal Carolina University to protest the current sitting presidential administration on Feb. 17. The peaceful demonstration spanned over the course of the day from 12 to 4 p.m.
Due to the observation of Presidents Day, the Social Justice Club (SJC) and Planned Parenthood Generation Action (PPGA) organizations gathered with posters to express feelings toward the current presidential administration regarding an influx of executive orders and policies.
Senior interdisciplinary studies student Olivia Brannen, president of SJC and executive board member of PPGA, said both clubs were there in collaboration to express their beliefs about President Donald Trump on Presidents’ Day.
“We’re protesting the current Trump administration,” Brannen said. “Their ideologies and philosophies do not coincide with freedom and liberation. And so, we don’t think that those things should be celebrated on Presidents’ Day, so we’re protesting those ideals.”
The peaceful demonstration drew a small crowd of counter protesters who engaged with passing students.
Along with club promotion, the club offered participants snacks and a space for community building through creating posters, sharing ideas and poetry readings.
“I stand for love, and I stand for rights of all people, whether I agree or disagree,” senior psychology major and PPGA secretary Laney Boggs said. “I just want to spread the love. I am tired of all the negativity. Love is the answer for me.”
