Today’s dating scene is a pitiful excuse for human compassion, it has strayed so far that it’s worth wondering whether the term “dating” is appropriate anymore.
Modern dating has become a stale hookup-centered culture that avoids commitment and true companionship. The term “situationship” is a sexual
relationship that is undefined and noncommittal.
The romance our parents got to experience seems lost.
The presence of the internet and social media in our everyday lives is to blame. Social media has established prejudice against pure social relationships and redirected value toward surface-level online ones instead.
Before social media, the only way to meet someone was to form genuine connections through face-to-face interactions. Now, dating apps like Tinder and Hinge have poisoned the once-simple ritual.
We are so accustomed to our online presence that we’d rather make social connections online instead of in person.
Endless swiping often leads to mediocre disappointment, resulting in feelings of hopelessness.
It is difficult to nurture a human connection that began through a screen. Social media creates endless options for possible partners. Daters avoid commitment with others because of the possibility that they could find better down the road. This has led to a lack of vulnerability, commitment and long-term relationships.
As a result, the “situationship” was coined to represent what current daters are left to deal with. This ridiculous term has established a new type of relationship, one that feeds off miscommunication and results in pain.
Hookup culture has plagued the possibility of long-committed relationships. Casual sex without emotional connection has become more common than loyal and affectionate relationships.
The victims of this gruesome dating scene are left questioning whether pure affection exists and if they’ll ever find love. Romance is dead, genuine relationships are scarce and modern dating is a mere breeding ground for heartbreak. Growing up, I swooned over my parents’ serendipitous love story full of passion, eagerly awaiting the same for myself.
Romantic comedies and love stories intoxicated my mind and shaped me into the hopeless romantic I am today. There are only crumbs of affection left for me in this obscene dating world.
