The Coastal Carolina University community reels from the untimely death of Travis E. Overton, vice president for executive initiatives and chief of staff, after students, faculty and staff were alerted of his death on the night of Dec. 31, 2024.
Overton proudly served in numerous positions since his arrival at Coastal in 2007.
President Michael T. Benson offered his condolences to Overton’s family and the Coastal community, speaking highly of Overton’s character in a campuswide email.
“His lasting impact on the University is immeasurable. I will miss him terribly,” Benson said.
No further information was provided regarding the circumstances of his death.
Overton left lasting impacts in areas such as his advising roles in student affairs, including the African American Initiative for Men (AAIM) and the CCU Black Alumni Chapter. Many took to social media to mourn, expressing their gratitude for Overton’s immeasurable contributions, both personally and professionally.
“His guidance and dedication have left an indelible mark on all who had the privilege to know him,” the CCU Black Alumni Chapter said in an Instagram post.
Overton’s passing shocked many for the coming new year and communities will find strength together as the University mourns this great loss.
