Coastal Carolina University (CCU) football lost against the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) in the Myrtle Beach Bowl 44-15 on Dec. 23.
Today’s bowl game was Coastal’s fifth time in a bowl game but the first time playing one at home. Both teams came into the game with the same record 6-6.
Freshman Tad Hudson debuted his first game after Coastal’s season quarterbacks, Ethan Vasko and Noah Kim, recently entered the transfer portal.
“I felt very comfortable, yeah, right when I got out there, it’s just ball you know. Wasn’t too nervous. I felt good. Like I said, just trying to be better,” Hudson said.
Before college ball, Hudson was a four-star prospect throwing 7,325 yards and 76 touchdowns at Hough High School in North Carolina.
In a press conference he talked about how he wants to practice more on throws, footwork and being able to make plays so his teammates can score.
After the first half, UTSA was leading the scoreboard 21-0. Roadrunner quarterback Owen McCown led his team to victory with 254 passing yards.
McCown attempted to complete a pass but was intercepted by linebacker Shane Bruce at the 34-yard line in the third quarter.
UTSA players were penalized for playing in the sand in the end zone after they got a touchdown. This kind of celebration has become popular for opposing teams who play at Brooks Stadium.
During the game, there were approximately nine calls for unsportsmanlike conduct and 13 calls made for personal penalties coming from both teams.
“I think there’s a lot of built-up frustration that came out,” CCU’s head coach Tim Beck said.
At the post-game press conference, both head coaches were asked about this.
“We were just going after it, I don’t think it was anything negative,” UTSA football’s head coach Jeff Traylor said.
Moving forward to the next season, Beck said he doesn’t want to say his goals for his players. Instead, he said he’s focusing on his players going into the transfer portal and recruiting new players for the 2025 season.
