Voting season is upon us, and it is time to start casting your vote.
Being on a college campus, people come from all parts of the country. Some students are more open to expressing their political views, while others keep to themselves.
Several students and professors at Coastal Carolina University (CCU) said they have not seen much about the election in terms of events or rallies on campus but have received numerous emails from the University reminding them to vote.
Public health major and Student Government Association (SGA) president pro-tempore Somoya Lamkin said students are very eager to vote and use their voices.
“I think students definitely this year, have strived to educate themselves more about policies and procedures, and are just really eager to vote for the first time,” Lamkin said.
Lamkin said this year’s presidential election is going to be a very close call and that it is important to vote and use your voice. She also said how easy it is to vote by mail if you are an out-of-state student, because every state has a voter registration page with step-by-step instructions on how to cast your vote.
Angela Fabbri, lecturer in the Department of Communication, Media and Culture, said Coastal’s campus is one-of-a-kind when it comes to talking about politics.
“I think we’re a unique campus in the sense that, yes we’re located in a red state, but students come from all over the country, all over the east coast,” Fabbri said. “As a professor, it’s important to stay politically neutral in my classes because I don’t want to isolate someone whose beliefs might differ from mine.”
Fabbri also said she thinks this election is different because of how polarized our government is and she predicts the race is going to be extremely close.
Sophomore professional golf management (PGM) major Joe Fenceroy said it is essential for people to vote because it shows what you stand for.
“Specifically, for me as an African American, my family fought for that right,” Fenceroy said. “That is basically, in my opinion, a thank you to all those people who fought for my right to be where I am right now.”
Election day is quickly approaching on Tuesday, Nov. 5, and early voting is already underway in many states, inlcuding South Carolina.
