Spooky sightings have led students to believe that ghosts lurk in Coastal Carolina University (CCU) housing.
Having no other explanation for what they’ve witnessed, students around campus are left uneasy. Multiple students who have lived in on-campus housing have experienced paranormal activity during their time at CCU. Misplaced items, strange noises and shadow figures remain inexplainable.
Senior English major Kyra Hoffman explained that when moving into her dorm in Singleton-Young Hall 108-A freshman year, the police officer assisting joked about the building being haunted. Hoffman soon realized this was no joking matter, as it truly was haunted.
Near the end of that semester, Hoffman’s roommate informed her that she had seen a shadowy figure lurking in her closet each night. Hoffman immediately contacted her previous roommate, asking if she had also seen this figure. The roommate agreed, describing it as tall, dark and lanky.
Hoffman revealed that shadowy figures often lived in her closet when she was a kid.
“I’ve had things follow me and its creepy,” she said, “I tell them to stay where they are.”
Karolina Martinez, a junior criminal justice major, described one of her many encounters with paranormal activity.
“I lived in Piedmont 1040, I went home pretty often. So then one weekend when I came back from home, I was on the phone and there was a literal tooth in my bed,” Martinez said. “It was really disgusting, it was terrifying and I started freaking out, I didn’t know what to do.”
Martinez also said that throughout her years at CCU, she’s come across other things like misplaced items and distorted voices.
Senior biology major Peyton Kinavey described the hauntings she experienced on the first floor of Chanticleer Hall, also known as “Little Chant,” her freshman year. She said she once woke up in the middle of the night to something standing over her bed.
“There was just a dark figure over my bed, and it was so creepy and I was like paralyzed,” Kinavey said.
She said she had her first encounter with the paranormal as a child.
“One of the distinct memories I have is I walked into my room one day and there was this old lady there. I remember telling my mom about it and I described her and she’s like ‘Peyton that’s your great, great grandmother,’” Kinavey said.
She also detailed one morning when she left her dorm early and accidentally slammed the door while her roommate was sound asleep, hoping she didn’t wake her. The roommate later called asking why the door was propped open, and Kinavey had no answer, being that she was already gone for the day.
“It was creepy. We had other things happen, like smaller things. Our items would be misplaced or there were times when I was in the dorm completely alone and you’d hear scratching,” Kinavey said.
