Coastal Carolina University (CCU) women’s soccer team finds themselves back in the win column after a 1-0 victory over Marshall on Oct. 18 at the CCU Soccer Complex.
The Chanticleers came into the game at 5-4-6 and looking to finally notch a win against a Marshall team sitting at 3-5-4. Coastal tied in their last three matches prior to this contest.
The lone goal was netted by Chanticleer’s freshman forward Eleanor Ashton in the 23rd minute of the match. Ashton has now scored five goals in a row, and six goals in her last seven games.
“It feels great, but I wouldn’t be able to do it without the girls around me,” Ashton said.
Marshall’s Thundering Herd attempted two shots on goal with 22 minutes remaining in the half with neither reaching the back of the net.
Despite tying in the last three contests, head coach for the Chanticleers, Jo Chubb, was pleased with what she saw from her team tonight to come out with a win.
“I don’t think it was our best performance on the ball, but they grafted off the ball, they worked for each other, and we were able to write some wrongs from earlier in the season,” Chubb said.
With only three games left in the regular season, the Sun Belt Conference tournament is just around the corner.
The message from coach Chubb to her team was a simple one.
“We’ve got three cup finals left, so it’s tight now. I’ve seen only eight teams go instead of 10 to the tournament and that’s the goal for us. It’s just one game at a time,” Chubb said.
The Chanticleers will hit the road to face the University of Louisiana Monroe for their next contest on Oct. 23 at 7 p.m.
