Walking to class isn’t just a commute, it’s practically New York Fashion Week.
Trends can influence how individuals see style and fashion today, and this year’s fall trends have made their mark on fashion. Sweatpants, miniskirts, leopard prints, baggy jeans, boots and print cardigans are here to play this season.
Freshman special education major Quinn Daniels pays close attention to what trends are popular.
“I’ve seen a lot of skirts, which I don’t in Massachusetts. Definitely a lot of leggings and just like crop tops, sweatpants, some [pajamas],” Daniels said.
While it is typical for students to get their inspiration from social media, friends or family, some have other sources. Sophomore English major Riley Schouest said she’s influenced by books.
“I feel like children’s books influence my style. I used to work at a daycare so, I think being very child-friendly and approachable is really interesting to me and making sure people feel comfortable to come talk to me,” Schouest said.
Other students, like freshman history major Laurence Johnson, may follow influencers or celebrities to keep up with changing trends. Johnson said Lil Yachty has impacted their style in particular, inspiring and influencing the different kinds of pants they wear.
Fall fashion in particular serves as an opportunity for students to see what is trending for clothing at the time, depending on the atmosphere. Sophomore exercise and sport science major Elijah Abney emphasized the importance of comfort over fashion.
“I would say it’s a lot of baggy clothing, people like to feel more comfortable now,” Abney said in terms of what is popular right now. “Then out, probably like the Timberlands. I feel like Timbs came in style and people don’t really like them for real. They just want them because they’re in style.”
Trends tend to influence many people’s styles, however, how someone chooses to express themselves through clothing is different for everyone. Junior engineering science major Andreu Maynard said fashion is all about balance.
“The most essential part of your outfit is the proportions. Like Lil Tecca, little shirts and big pants,” Maynard said. “The proportions can make your ‘fit’ go from here to here, because you can wear a basic ‘fit’ like a white tee, but your pants can be proportioned so well to the [T-shirt] that it makes the fit look really well.”
