A sudden rush of scooter thefts on Coastal Carolina University’s campus is raising concern about security for students and their property.
For some students, their scooters are an essential part of their day. This was the case for senior finance major Julian Craig, who emphasized the importance of using it in his day-to-day activities.
“My scooter is my only mode of transportation besides the shuttles, which really only go to campus and Walmart,” Craig said. “So, if it were stolen, I would feel kind of trapped and very limited in what I can do.”
Craig shared what he thought would decrease the number of stolen scooters around campus, with similar opinions as sophomore business management major James Pisano. Both students said the University should invest in surveillance and stricter security measures.
“Maybe if they had cameras at the bike racks or separate racks for scooters and bikes, there would be less theft,” Craig said.
Sophomore business management major Nichols Brashears was one of the unfortunate victims of these thefts and recalled walking back to where he left his scooter outside Tradition Hall. Brashears said he walked out of the building only to find his scooter had been stolen and he panicked.
Investigations are underway according to CCU’s Department of Public Safety, who could not give The Chanticleer any information at this time. They recommend students take precautions like keeping scooters locked up in well-lit areas to ensure their safety.
