A surprise proposal under Saturday night lights was not what Jennifer Schlosser, associate chair of sociology, was expecting at the Coastal Carolina University (CCU) football game.
“I had no idea,” Schlosser said. “It was a pretty awesome experience.”
Schlosser’s fiancé, Jeff Piasecki, coordinated the proposal with Coastal Events staff prior to the game. In the second quarter, Schlosser says a Coastal Events staff member came to her seat, telling her she had been selected to kick a field goal for a free pair of cowboy boots. She told the staff member no at first, until Piasecki said he would do it if she came with him.
When they got to the field, he got on one knee during a timeout. In that moment, Schlosser said he forgot to say the one important question– ‘will you marry me’, until she reminded him. To which, she said yes.
She said she “blacked out” during the proposal and doesn’t remember Chauncey on the field or taking photos with CCU President Michael Benson.
“I was sweating, I was crying, and people are taking my picture and I’m like I don’t even know what’s going on right now,” she said.
Piasecki’s two nephews, niece and sister were present. However, they were unaware of his proposal plans. Scholsser said they shared the excitement with her.
Along with family, campus share their excitement with the newly engaged couple. The week after the proposal, she said people she didn’t know were coming up to her on campus to congratulate her. Her students applauded when she walked into class.
“I’ll take my 15 minutes of fame at Coastal,” she said.
The pair met on an online dating app, and she said she was sure about him when they met. They dated for two years before the proposal.
“I really think that I knew on our first date that like, he was the one,” she said.
