Chant of the Week: Megan Hopton
This issue’s Chant of the Week features a woman who shined bright as a member of Coastal Carolina University’s tennis team.
Super senior tennis player Megan Hopton won Sun Belt Conference player of the week for her success during the week of March 7-12. The athlete from the city of Hull in Swanland, England played three seasons at the University of Tulsa before transferring to CCU for the 2022 season.
To earn her Sun Belt player of the week honors, she went undefeated in both singles and doubles with records of 3-0 and 4-0, respectively. Hopton and her Chants are currently on a 10-game win streak after defeating Georgia State University, 4-1, to improve to 2-0 in conference play.
“For me, it’s really nice to get recognition that I’ve been working really hard and for being super focused on the goal, which is playing as hard as I can and winning,” Hopton said. “I think it proves to the rest of the conference that Coastal Carolina is a big name to look out for.”
Hopton said she has confidence in her team as they move into the heart of their season and conference play.
“I think that we’re in a really strong position compared to the rest of the conference right now, she said. “We have a really good shot at winning this year but it’s really down to proving we can play against the best teams like Old Dominion and Marshall and not be afraid to just go out there and get it.”
Hopton has a couple of signature celebrations after she gets a point or wins a match. One of them is her yelling, “let’s go!” with an emphasis on the “let’s,” and another being “come on!” with the emphasis sometimes being placed on either word.
“‘Let’s go’ is definitely something I picked up in the states. In England, we say ‘come on’ a lot,” Hopton said. “‘Let’s go’ pumps me up and pumps up the rest of my team.”
Hopton and her teammates look to keep up their momentum throughout conference play.
