Bird Bowl pits Chants versus Eagles
The Chanticleers aim to stay undefeated as they take on the 3-1 Georgia Southern University Eagles this Saturday at 4 p.m.
The Chants are no strangers to unbeaten starts since they started their last season 6-0 and were undefeated in the regular season in 2020. They came off their first road and conference game of the season as they defeated Georgia State 41-24.
Although Coastal came out with the victory, a fourth quarter injury to quarterback Grayson McCall kept him out for the rest of the game. The injury did not seem too serious as McCall asked Coach Jamey Chadwell to go back into the game.
McCall is the leader of one of the top offenses in the nation as he has thrown for 1,001 yards on a 70% completion rate with 11 touchdowns and one interception. The Chants need McCall in playable shape if they hope to keep up with an Eagles’ offense, which is ranked top 15 in the nation. The Eagles are averaging over 500 yards of total offense and nearly 40 points per game.
Last season, Coastal handily beat Georgia Southern in a low-scoring 28-8 affair. The matchup this year should be a high-scoring back-and-forth contest. Both teams average near the same in points scored and points allowed per game. The difference maker could be the run game, as the Chants only allow 96 yards per game and the Eagles allow 218.
Students who will be watching should be prepared for an electric game.
